Optical communication networks employing Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) are
poised to become the dominant networking infrastructure of the future. They enable efficient
use of fiber capacity an spur the development of new high-bandwidth applications. While
much research has been undertaken on the various aspects of optical networking, the
important issue of survivability in optical networks has not been addressed adequately. The
aim of this Special Issue is to consolidate new and original research work in this area.
Fundamental research articles and practical experience reports are solicited. This Special
Issue is scheduled to be published in January/February 2001. Topics of interest include, but
are not limited to :
Fault modeling in optical networks
Physical and virtual topology design of survivable optical networks
Protection schemes in optical networks
Fault detection schemes/algorithms
Route-hardening and restoration algorithms
Impact of wavelength conversion on survivable network design
Submitted articles must not have been previously published or currently submitted for
publication elsewhere.
Authors must follow JHSN guidelines regarding the manuscript and its format. For details,
please check the instructions page To submit, send a Postscript or PDF file to
choi@seas.gwu.edu or suresh@seas.gwu.edu by April, 2000. The Postscript or PDF file
should be formatted such that it can be viewed using Ghostview (PS file) or Acrobat Reader
(PDF file).
