About ECOC

ECOC is the premium event on optical communication within Europe with
more than 2,000 participants and a large technical exhibition. It is
an international platform for everyone involved in optical
communication, from scientists to managers working in the field. More
than 300 papers will be presented in parallel sessions covering the
   most recent technical progress.

The role and the impact of photonic technology in present and future
telecommunication networks will be explained and discussed in
tutorials, invited papers and short courses.

ECOC'01 will be held in combination with POF'01, the 10th
International Conference on Plastic Optical Fibres. POF is a major
event on polymer optical fibres and waveguide technology and provides
a forum for discussions on new developments of the technology, the
   system implementation and practical applications.

About Amsterdam

Amsterdam has been dubbed the `Global Village'. Its historical roots
keep it curiously cosmopolitan, yet at the same time it is very
   relaxed.

Amsterdam is home to some of the best art in the world, has more
canals than Venice, more bridges than Paris and around 7,000 monuments
   in the city centre.

But behind historical façades, you'll find cafés, restaurants and a
buzzing night life. There are all sorts of opportunities for trips
around the city and out into the countryside. And... do not forget to
   ride a bike.

                        Symposia on Selected Topics:

Convergence of IP and Optical Networking

                 Organiser: Antonio Manzalini, CSELT, Italy
The recent success of the Internet has fostered the convergence
towards a single networking protocol (IP or Internet Protocol) to
carry voice, video and data traffic. In order to keep up with the
resulting increase in bandwidth demand, optical networking is becoming
the dominant technology for high capacity backbone networks. The next
step will be the convergence between IP and optical networking in
order to allow a flexible, manageable and cost effective network
infrastructure supporting different QoS classes. This symposium will
address key issues related to the convergence of IP and optical
                                networking.

                        Polymer Fiber Communication

Organiser: Yasuhiro Koike, Keio University, Japan
Recent advances in the properties of Polymer Optical Fibres (POF)
allow several new applications for communication. PMMA based POF has
been already used as data communication in automobile, and has been
intensively studied as POF home networking based on such as an IEEE
1394. Very recently, it has been demonstrated that the perfluorinated
(PF) polymer based graded index fibre (GI POF) has the potential of
achieving a higher bitrate than standard silica optical fibre, because
of lower material dispersion of the PF polymer than that of silica and
other polymer materials. The symposium will address POF and its
application in data networks, communication systems, and in optical
interconnection. Related active and passive components will also be
                                 addressed.

                           Optical Interconnects

Organiser: Pietro Mailinverni European Commission, DG Information
                                  Society
This symposium addresses long-term research issues on short distance
parallel optical interconnect links. It covers optoelectronic
technologies and system architectures at the IC-access level, the
board and backplane level as well as the intercabinet level. Both
advanced device work and novel system demonstration papers are
                                 welcomed.

                             Photonic Crystals

Organiser: Richard De La Rue, University of Glasgow, UK
Photonic Crystals or Photonic Bandgap Materials have now attracted the
attention of many scientific groups around the world because of their
interesting and special properties, giving a number of new possible
applications. Both in passive components (such as special fibres and
passive waveguide structures) and in active devices (LEDs, lasers and
active filters ) considerable progress has been achieved. The
properties of Photonic Crystals are exciting and have already
stimulated the creation of start-up companies. This Special Symposium
will provide a forum to review recent theoretical and experimental
results, as well as an introduction to this topic for those who are
                             new to the field.

                          Short Courses on Sunday

5 short courses in the morning and 5 in the afternoon will be
organised. They will also be repeated during the days of the
                                conference.

                     Workshop IEEE/LEOS Benelux Chapter

How to Start your Photonics Business

Organiser: Roel Baets, Ghent University - IMEC, Belgium
Objective of the workshop is to provide a usable insight in the
process of creating a start-up company in the field of optical
communications. The workshop will focus on the European context and
will highlight differences with the North American situation. A
tutorial presentation will give a general overview of the various
aspects involved in starting a photonics company. This includes the
making of a business case, the marketing plan, the definition of a
product portfolio, the search of venture capital, the legal and
intellectual property matters, etc. Following this tutorial, speakers
from various start-ups will share their hands-on experience. Different
cases will be presented in the areas of optical components and
subsystems, photonic design, and networks. There will be ample
opportunities for questions and discussion. The workshop is targeted
at all photonics engineers and scientists with an entrepreneurial
                                 interest.

                     Photonic Metro and Access Networks

Organiser: Ton Koonen, TUE-Cobra, The Netherlands
After the success of photonic technologies in backbone networks
resulting in a drastic increase of capacity, improved flexibility and
a recent convergence towards an IP/photonic network, it is envisaged
that this success will be repeated in the metro and access area. This
half-day workshop will be organized by the IST-OPTIMIST project and
will address recent developments and key issues in the area of
                    photonic metro and access networks.
