                     September 30, October 1-2, 2001

                              To be held at
                      Sheraton University City Hotel
                        Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
                                   USA

                            Sponsored by TBA

SCOPE:

Active networks aims to ease the introduction of network services by adding
dynamic programmability to network devices such as routers, and making
aspects of the programmability accessible to users. Active networks
research has focused on the development and testing of active techniques,
that enable dynamic programmability in a networked environment. These
techniques have a wide variety of applications. At IWAN 2001 we aim to
bring together members of the various communities using active and related
techniques, and provide a forum for discussion and collaboration, involving
researchers, developers, and potential users. At IWAN2001 we encourage the
submission of papers that cover the application of active techniques to all
aspects of network based communication, including active transport, active
services, active terminals and active management. In addition the meeting
will have a focus on relating customer needs and customer oriented services
to active techniques. It is expected that most submissions will include
quantitative results, however, we will welcome high quality descriptive
contributions, where the ideas are particularly novel, or where the concepts
introduced are likely to influence the work of other groups. Authors are
invited to submit papers addressing but not limited to the following topics:

 * Architectures and New Concepts for Active Networks , Systems and
   Environments
 * Applications for Active Networks, Systems and Environments
 * Active Services
 * New network applications (that might need active properties, but are not
   necessarily designed for an active environment)
 * Platforms for the implementation of active systems
 * Programmable network elements
 * Networked computing infrastructures
 * Programmable devices (inc. PDAs, soft radio, etc)
 * Management of Active Networks and systems
 * Security in Active Networks and systems
 * Mobility in active networks and systems
 * Service creation, deployment, and management in Active systems
 * Implementation of Active Network Infrastructures
 * Experiences and evaluation of the concepts and implementation
 * Standardization of Active Networks

INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS:

Submissions should describe original work (not submitted or
published elsewhere) and be 20 double-spaced pages (5,000 words)
or less in length. Submissions should include: title, authors,
affiliations, 150 word abstract, and list of keywords. Identify
the author responsible for correspondence, including the author's
name, position, mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, and
e-mail address. One of the authors of each accepted paper must
present the paper at IWAN2001. The proceedings of the conference
will be published by Springer-Verlag Heidelberg in the Lecture
Notes in Computer Science Series.
