Call for papers

October 15, 2001
Chaparral Suites Hotel, Scottsdale, Arizona

In conjunction with the International Conference on Computer Communications
and Networks ICCCN. Sponsored by NSF and the Telecommunications and
Information Technology Institute at Florida International University.

The NSF Workshop on an Infrastructure for Mobile and Wireless Systems will
bring together the leading researchers and developers in fields adjacent to
mobile and wireless systems. The goal of the workshop is to foster
communication between the different wireless communities (e.g.
communication, computing, operating systems and networks for wireless
access) and the distributed systems and information systems communities.
Such collaboration is necessitated by the current needs of wireless
technologies, if new horizons of research and development are to be reached.

Scope:

The objective of the workshop is to define and establish a common
infrastructure of the discipline and to develop a consensus-based document
that will provide a foundation for implementation, standardization, as well
as for further research. The workshop will offer the opportunity to identify
and define fundamental concepts and techniques, resolve conflicts between
certain approaches in the area and provide a common ground for advanced
wireless technologies as well as the corresponding research needed to enable
that technology. The topics that will be addressed include, but are not
limited to, the following as they pertain to the development of a common
infrastructure:

      Wireless/Mobile Satellite Communication Networks
      Wireless Multimedia Applications
      Internet Services/Applications
      Network Management Performance Modeling/Analysis
      Network Architectures
      Interoperability
      Data Caching and Hoarding
      Query Languages for Mobile Users
      Transaction Models for Wireless Access
      Quality of Service Issues
      Global Infrastructure
      Network Evolution
      Networked Databases
      Heterogeneous Databases
      Mediator Systems
      Data Replication
      Databases for Mobile Users
      Data synchronization
      Secure Architectures
      Mobile E-commerce

Workshop Format:

The workshop format will be designed to encourage productive interaction
among participants. It will consist of the presentation of position papers
as well as of invited papers on new developments and current trends with
ample time allocated for group discussions. This format should provide a
forum for collaborations to develop among members of the different research
and development communities. Attendance will be limited and attendants will
be asked to contribute to a consensus-based paper on an infrastructure to be
published after the workshop.

Submission:

Authors are invited to submit position papers proposing a portion of the
infrastructure that they consider to be amenable to consensus. Position
papers that challenge the mobile computing community with new technologies
and visionary applications are also encouraged. Position papers should be
between 5 to 10 pages in length, and should include the title, author(s),
authors' affiliation and an abstract. Paper submission in LNCS format
(http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html) is encouraged. Papers
accepted or under review by other conferences, workshops or journals
including the ICCCN conference are not acceptable. Submitters should also
indicate their willingness to contribute to the final report. Electronic
submission is strongly encouraged. If electronic submission is not possible,
five (5) hard copies of the paper should be sent to the address below. The
accepted papers will be distributed to the participants prior to the
workshop and will also appear in print together with the consensus paper
after the workshop. It is planned to publish the post-workshop proceedings
in the Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science.
