Call for Papers
Wireless LAN technologies have changed dramatically in the past 2
years. In September 1999, the IEEE 802.11 Working Group for Wireless
LANs finalized a 5 GHz standard (approved as IEEE 802.11a) that will
support wireless data rates ranging from 6 to 54 Mbit/s using
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). In an extension to
the 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11 standard (approved as IEEE 802.11b on
September 1999), Complementary Code Keying (CCK) is used to transfer
packets at data rates of up to 11 Mbit/s. Current work attempts to
double this rate to 22 Mbit/s using Packet Binary Convolutional Codes
(PBCC). These new developments have significant implications in that
the standards are now more than capable of supporting streaming audio
and video traffic needed for mobile Internet applications.
