TERENA Networking Conference 2002
Limerick, Ireland
3 - 6 June 2002
"Networks for Collaboration"
The international research community was the first to create and deploy
modern computer-based communication technologies, and to develop and use
networked applications. The first wave of this development resulted in the
sharing of computer processing power (remote login), computerised data
(file transfer) and interpersonal messages (email). The second wave, which
was triggered by the Web revolution, produced a dramatic improvement in the
sharing of information that is presented ready for consumption by human
beings. The next wave will propel us into a new dimension where high-end
computer processing power, raw data and refined information, complex
applications and more generally all types of computer-based resources will
be shared seamlessly, even though they are distributed all over the world
and managed by many different organisations. And what is more, all this
will be available to the user anytime anywhere and just like at his own desk.
This new paradigm of networking by and for collaboration between
computer-based resources and collaboration between human beings requires
new concepts, robust and fast underlying networking infrastructures,
advanced middleware, sophisticated software technologies and new
application models.
The TERENA Networking Conference 2002 will feature the multiple facets of
this third phase of the computer networking revolution. It will present the
Grid computing concept, which enables the integrated, collaborative use of
high-end computers, networks, databases and scientific instruments. The
conference will also address the underlying networking technologies:
optical transmission and switching, convergence to IP, generalised MPLS, IP
version 6, high-speed line and wireless access. And it will cover the
complementary technologies: distributed databases, authentication and
pro-active security, the peer-to-peer model, end-to-end quality of service.
Recent advances in middleware will be a main topic in the conference.
Finally, the conference will discuss the resulting services and benefits
that will be available to users and in particular researchers and students:
security, mobility, ubiquity and location independence.
The TERENA Networking Conferences are prominent annual events, offering an
opportunity to present and discuss technical and strategic aspects of the
provision of networks and services to the research and education community,
and the corresponding research and development activities. They bring
together leading figures from the research networking community in Europe
and world-wide, and provide a unique opportunity to learn about the latest
developments and plans.
The TERENA Networking Conference 2002 will be structured around keynote
presentations and invited talks, complemented by presentations of reviewed
papers and panel discussions.
Subject Areas for the Conference
--------------------------------
Topics for the conference will include:
- Grid computing
Programming models, performance, protocols, remote data access, scheduling,
security, account management, user services, applications.
- Advanced networking technologies and protocols
Photonic transmission and lambda switching, advanced routing, generalised
MPLS, IPv6 deployment and experience, Quality of Service, line and wireless
access, end-to-end performance.
- Data-oriented technologies
Peer-to-peer models, distributed databases, metadata applications and
supporting technologies, content-based retrieval.
- Middleware and security
Public Key Infrastructure, directories, pro-active security and incident
handling.
Paper submission
----------------
Papers are invited on all subjects relevant to the spirit and objectives of
the Conference; to present, discuss and learn about the latest developments
in networking technology for the Research and Education community. The
above topics are an indication of the planned scope of the Conference, but
are not meant to be restrictive.
All papers must be submitted in English, the official language of the
conference. Full papers (maximum 4,000 words) should be structured and
submitted according to the "Formatting Guidelines and Submission
Instructions for Authors", which are available from the TERENA Secretariat
or from the TERENA Web server at:
http://www.terena.nl/tnc2002/guidelines.html
The deadline for paper submissions is 15 November 2001
Closer to the date of the conference, TERENA will issue a Call for Short
Papers to provide an opportunity to present late-breaking news in sessions
dedicated to recent results in the development and deployment of networking
infrastructures, services and applications.
Publications
------------
All accepted papers will be presented at the conference. Abstracts of the
presentations will be published in a booklet and distributed to
participants at the conference. After the conference all presented papers
will be made available on the TERENA Web server, and selected papers,
chosen by the Programme Committee, may be published in a special issue of a
recognised international journal.
Tutorials and Demonstrations
----------------------------
Participants from industry and academia will have the opportunity to
present new network applications in the form of demonstrations. An
exhibition area will be available for conference sponsors.
TERENA also plans on tutorials to be held in conjunction with the
conference. Proposals for demonstrations and tutorials should be documented
by a description not exceeding one page and sent by email before 15
November 2001 to:
tnc-2002@terena.nl .
Meetings held in conjunction with the Conference
------------------------------------------------
Some projects associated with TERENA will organise open workshops in
conjunction with the TERENA Networking Conference, to present their latest
results and the ongoing work and to receive feedback from the research
networking community. In addition, TERENA Task Forces and participants in
TERENA projects will hold meetings during the conference week to discuss
their latest results. There will also be opportunities for informal "Birds
of a Feather" sessions. In general, these meetings will be open to all.
Conference venue
----------------
The TERENA Networking Conference 2002 will be held in Limerick, a
historical trade, industry and harbour city in the South-West of Ireland.
Monuments in the city reflect its history of more than a thousand years.
Limerick is also a good starting point for excursions to, for example, the
Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and Kilkee on the Atlantic coast. The
conference venue will be the University Concert Hall located on the
beautiful campus of the University of Limerick, just outside the city.
Accommodation for participants will be available on campus. Shannon
Airport, located 22 kilometres from the city, is served by frequent direct
flights from many major airports in Europe and North America.
