                   Call for Papers on the Feature Topic:
    Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) for Data Transport over SONET/SDH or
                      G.709 Optical Transport Networks

                               Guest Editors:
                         Steve Gorshe (PMC-Sierra)
                           Tim Armstrong (Nortel)
                            Nevin Jones (Agere)

   The existing methods for transporting data over SONET/SDH have various
   limitations. Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) is being developed in
   North America (T1X1) and internationally (ITU-T SG15) as a standard,
   generic encapsulation method for data transport. GFP minimizes the
   protocol-specific processing and protocol translation associated with
   Packet over SONET/SDH and avoids the complex adaptation layer
   processing of ATM. GFP also allows the transparent transport of
   character stream interfaces (e.g., 8B/10B encoded Gigabit Ethernet) in
   addition to frame-based client signals. The ITU-T expects to have
   stable text for the initial version of the GFP standard in October.
   This feature topic is intended to provide tutorial information to the
   Communications Magazine readers on GFP, as well as its applications
   and potential extensions. Papers are solicited in, although not
   limited to, the following areas:
     * Frame-mapped GFP applications
     * Transparent GFP applications
     * Ring topology applications
     * Comparison of GFP to existing and other emerging transport
       protocols.
     * Extensibility of GFP to a layer network, including associated
       management issues
     * Deployment considerations
     * Extensions to the GFP protocol
