Publication: Summer 2002
"Ubiquitous Computing", a phrase which the late Mark Weiser (1952 - 1999)
described in 1988 as "the calm technology, that recedes into the background
of our lives", matures from the vision of the Nineties to reality of the
young millennium, enabling increasing mobility and interaction of services
and applications in a large variety of areas in daily life. Recently, we have
seen major progress in developing the new off-the-desktop computing paradigm
that moves towards the notion of a pervasive, wearable, unobtrusive,
disappearing, or invisible computer.
This special issue of Computer Communications seeks new and unpublished
contributions addressing existing and future approaches; publishing research
within the full scope from technology to application. Areas of interest
include, but are not limited to:
* Data Transmission Technology: Wired and Wireless, Permanent and Ad-hoc
* Localization Technologies, Location Aware Services, Context Awareness
* Seamless Integration Approaches for Devices in Home, Office, and Outdoors
* Sensor / Actuator Communication
* Zero-Gateway-Architecture
* Specific Requirements for Middleware, Distributed Processing, and Management
* Protection of Privacy and Security Aspects for Personal Profiles of the
* Users in Ubiquitous Environments
* Edge Devices and Technologies, from Handhelds and Wearables to Vehicle
* Systems and Smart Buildings
* User-centric and Personalized Services
* Applications and Interfaces for User Interaction, Intelligent Environments
* Social Implications and Impacts on Daily Life
Papers are requested on both theoretical and applied aspects of
Ubiquitous Computing.
