Special Issue on: "Wireless Home Networks"

Objectives

Until recently, the major obstacle to the "digital networked house" has
been the limitations of access networks. The well-known "last mile
problem" has hindered the broadband access at home and, therefore, has
limited the home networking applications. However, the recent advances in
transmission and broadband access technologies are very promising and
capable to bring the information superhighway to thousands of houses
worldwide. This fact coupled with the explosion of the Internet, the
increasing demand for intelligent home devices, the availability of plenty
in-home computing resources, etc. calls for home networking solutions.
These solutions would provide connectivity between in-home devices, would
efficiently exploit the high-speed access to the Internet and would
establish a new home paradigm. It would also open up a new mass market and
would set the ground for a vast range of new home applications.

For the above solutions to be widely acceptable, the reliability,
performance, installation ease and cost are amongst the most crucial
factors that need to be efficiently addressed. Indeed, performance and
reliability have proved to be key concerns for the residential users.
Also, complex wiring and expensive networking devices (such as Residential
Gateways, modems, SOHO routers) have turned to be significant barriers to
the wide deployment of home-networked products. Especially the pulling of
new wires in an existing home environment is commonly a cumbersome process
and usually the source of several problems. For this reason, great focus
has been recently put on the so-called "no-new-wires" solutions. These
home networking solutions include technologies that either (i) re-use the
existing in-home cables or (ii) apply wireless connectivity means.

This special issue of the MC2R is devoted to the second alternative
solution, i.e. the home networking with wireless means. The purpose is to
disseminate the recent advances and research activities in the field of
Wireless Home Networking and provide a comprehensive and updated reference
in this field. In this context, the challenges, the applications and the
technologies that enable the wireless home networking will be addressed.
More specifically, the special issue will cover topics that include the
architecture, design, modelling, performance evaluation, and
experimentation of wireless home networks. MC2R particularly encourages
articles from industry in order to get a better idea of what lies ahead
from the commercial end of things.

Topics

Original research and review papers will be solicited that cover (but are not limited to) any of the following
areas:
- Wireless home network architectures
- Wireless home network technologies (IEEE802.11, IEEE802.15.3, Bluetooth, HIPERLAN/2, etc.)
- Ad hoc home networks
- Techniques to address the particular challenges of wireless home networks
- Modelling of the wireless home environment (e.g. the interferences from other home devices)
- Multimedia home communications
- Resource discovery and self-configuration
- Intelligent home agents
- Design of lightweight protocols for Internet-enabled home devices
- Residential Gateways: architectures, software, prototyping
- Management tools for wireless home networks
- Applications tailored for wireless home environments

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Paper submission will be handled electronically. After following the
detailed submission instructions from the MC2R web page
(http://www.acm.org/sigmobile/MC2R), authors should e-mail a PDF,
PostScript or Word version of their full paper to the prime Guest Editor.
Note that all sources of accepted papers should be available in order to
rebuild the papers for final typesetting, while LaTeX is strongly
encouraged.
