   User Opportunities - Network Challenges

   Submission deadline: 16 December 2002

The joint TERENA Networking Conference 2003 and the CARNet Users'
Conference 2003 is organised by TERENA, the Trans-European Networking
Association and by CARNet, the Croatian academic and research network.
The joint conference is hosted by CARNet.

TERENA Networking Conferences are prominent annual events, offering an
opportunity to present and discuss technical and strategic aspects of
the provision of networks and services to the research and education
community, and the corresponding research and development activities.
They bring together leading figures from the research networking
community in Europe and worldwide, and provide a unique opportunity to
learn about the latest developments and plans.

CARNet Users' Conferences provide a meeting place, bringing together
users, researchers, scientists, IT experts and all who face IT
challenges. CUC is designed as a platform that provides the
opportunity for exchanging ideas, and presenting and discussing
   experiences.

The joint conference offers a unique opportunity for technical
networking specialists and users of services to meet and discuss
   requirements for the future.

The conference will also include presentations on the important legal
and policy issues that influence and, indeed, threaten the fundamental
structure and the future of the Internet in general and the research
   and education networks in particular.

The conference will be structured around keynote presentations and
invited talks, complemented by presentations of reviewed papers and
   panel discussions.
The conference presentations will focus on the technology as well as
   the user applications for:
     * ACCESS: Authentication, Authorisation, and Accounting (AAA),
mobility, last mile, resources discovery, firewalls and wireless
networking, digital rights management, copyright and accessibility
     * SHARING:   peer-to-peer,  end-to-end,  videoconferencing,  virtual
worlds and virtual communities, information retrieval and distance
       education
     * SECURITY: network and system security, application data security,
encryption, public key systems, strategic issues and privacy
     * INTEGRATION: protocols at the network layer, distributed
environments, Open Grid, web services and directories
     * TECHNOLOGIES FOR ADVANCED NETWORKING: IPv6, voice over IP, optical
networks, network performance and quality of service

SUBMISSION

Extended papers (rather than full papers) are invited on all subjects
relevant to the spirit and objectives of the conference: to present,
discuss and learn about the latest developments in networking
technology for the Research and Education community and their use by
   the user community.

The above topics are an indication of the planned scope of the
Conference, but are not meant to be restrictive.

Extended abstracts of about 1200 words (two A4 pages) must be
submitted in English, the official language of the conference. The
abstracts should be structured and submitted according to the
"Formatting Guidelines and Submission Instructions for Authors", (html
version or pdf version) and sent by e-mail to tnc2003@terena.nl

Closer to the date of the conference, TERENA and CARNet will issue a
Call for Short Presentations to provide an opportunity to present
late-breaking news in sessions dedicated to recent results in the
development and deployment of networking infrastructures, user
   services and applications.
The joint conference will be held in the Hotel Opera in Zagreb. See:
