Overview
The traffic demands for mobile and wireless
networks are steadily increasing. They are
expected to carry various traffic types such as
voice, video, and data. They use different
communication technologies and different medium
access control protocols. At the same time, their
scope ranges from wide area cellular networks to
local area, ad-hoc, and personal area networks. In
each of these environments, mobile and wireless
networks have to cope with the problems of users'
mobility, traffic types and users' QOS
requirements. Determining the performance of
these networks under variable user populations,
bursty traffic types, user mobility, in the presence
of interference and for given battery power
constraints, is a challenging task. Also, the
problem of defining, implementing, and evaluating
QoS architectures over different wireless
networking technologies is far from being well
understood. This journal issue plans to address
performance and QoS issues both in isolated
networking environments, such as cellular
networks, wireless LANs, ad-hoc networks, and
personal area networks, and in heterogeneous
environments formed by interconnecting networks
of different types.
Scope
This special issue will focus on performance
evaluation and QoS support in wireless networks.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
Wireless medium access control protocols
Resource management and bandwidth assignment
Dynamic channel assignment policies
Quality of Service architectures in mobile systems
Admission Control in mobile networks
Performance evaluation of wireless Internet
Mobile IP
Performance of mobility management protocols
Performance evaluation of mobile ad-hoc networks
Performance and QoS issues in Bluetooth networks
Coexistence and interference of networks using
different standards (e.g., Bluetooth and IEEE
802.11x)
Performance evaluation of heterogeneous wireless
networks
Traffic modeling in wireless networks
