Recently, the demand for wireless communications has grown
tremendously. The need for ``information anywhere anytime" has been a
driving force for the increasing growth in Web and Internet
technology, wireless communication, and portable computing devices.
The field of mobile computing and wireless computing is the merger of
these advances in information processing and communication with the
aim of providing seamless and ubiquitous computing environment for
mobile users. In such wireless environments, database applications are
enhanced with useful features of wireless technology and mobility of
the clients/nodes provides an interesting new dimension to traditional
to distributed computing. On the other hand, wireless communications
also put certain limits on database applications due to limited
bandwidth and communication disruptions. Hence, introducing wireless
communications in database systems also means that specific problems
have yet to be solved while some unique features of the technology
must be taken into account in order to design optimal systems.
The purpose of the proposed symposium is to focus on the novel ways in
which DBMS architecture and mechanisms can be adapted to such a
wireless environment. Specific areas of interest include (but are not
limited to):
* Location Management and Mobility Management for Wireless Networks
* Mobile Database Transaction Models
* Data distribution, Replication, Dissemination, caching and
Synchronization
* Recovery and Fault Tolerance
* Mobility Awareness and Adaptability
* Wireless Software, Service, and Application Infrastructures
* Mobile Query Languages and Query Processing
* Mobile E-Commerce
* Mobile Objects and Agents: Models and Languages
