COST 273

Towards Mobile Broadband
Multimedia Networks

                 ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

                             Workshop on

                   BROADBAND WIRELESS LOCAL ACCESS

                        May 21-22, 2003, PARIS

                                FRANCE

General presentation:

The workshop is aimed at presenting and discussing the latest
scientific and technical advances intended for providing wireless high
data rate local access, broadly understood to include, for example,
Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) and Wireless Personal Area
Networks (WPANs). The integration/co-existence of these systems with
3G cellular networks will also be discussed. This includes research
results on physical layer, MAC, link and RRC layer issues, together
with higher protocols. The main objective of the workshop is to
highlight the state of the art of the present technologies and their
limitations, the challenges to surmount for a massive success of these
technologies, and the envisioned routes towards higher performance,
greater social benefit, or a better integration in the world of
"ambient intelligence". The relative positions of Europe, and other
countries outside Europe, regarding standards in these areas will also
be addressed.

The workshop is in particular focused on, although not limited to,
the subjects below:

Noise/interference mitigation
Advanced adaptive modulation and coding techniques
Multiple antenna and MIMO systems
Interoperability, reconfigurability and software radio issues
Advanced Radio Resource Management techniques in wireless networks
Spectrum pooling
Packet Scheduling and QoS in Wireless Systems
Power Management for low-energy terminals
Ad-hoc networking, heterogeneous and self-organizing networks
Broadband access in "hot spots"
Convergence with other systems (e.g. UMTS)

Researchers of both academic laboratories and industry research
centres will be very welcome, for a fruitful synthesis of practical
experience and fundamental theory. The workshop will also give the
opportunity of the members of COST 273 to present and disseminate the
results of the work carried out within this Action.

Organisation:

The workshop is organised jointly by ENSTA and University of Lille,
and it will take place in Paris (France) from Wednesday 21 May 2003
morning to Thursday 22 May noon (one day and a half). It will include
both invited and contributed presentations. The management committee
of COST 273 will select contributions according to the usual quality
criteria. However it should be understood that the workshop is an open
event, aiming to stimulate a topical and active debate between
contributors and experts in the field from the academia, manufacturers
and service providers.

Submission and acceptance of contributions:

Contributions should be sent by e-mail until March 21, 2003, in the
form of a camera-ready pdf file. Detailed instructions can be found in
information for author. An abstract between 100 and 200 words must be
sent separatly in .txt format including name and affiliation.

please send your manuscript (.pdf) and abstract (.txt) as attachments
to workshop-submission@ensta.fr

The acceptance is expected to be notified to authors before April 7,
2003. The final program should be available on the workshop web site
by April 18, 2003. A final version of accepted papers may subsequently
be sent, no later than May 4.

 COST 273 Management Committee Meeting:

Fully registered members of the COST 273 action can participate in the
MCM, which will take place in ENSTA, Paris, from Thursday 22 May 14:00
pm to Friday 17:00 pm, and in the tutorials on Tuesday 20 May
afternoon. COST members can obtain specific information, and register
for the meeting, through the COST 273 web site
