Call for papers IEEE Communication Magazine August 2003 issue
Feature Topic: Storage Area Networking
Scope: The Storage networking evolution has started mainly in the last decade.
Along with the evolution, came the complexities of solution and technology choice.
The SAN NAS debate dominated the early period of evolution but somewhat
tempered through an industry acceptance or understanding of the necessity of co-
existence. Along came the plethora of alphabet soups of protocols (e.g. FCIP, iFCP,
iSCSI, GE) to choose from, multiple virtualization viewpoints, multiple storage
transactional formats and other architectural and protocol choices, which has made
the selection process ever more complicated if not somewhat discouraging to the
users and implementers. Nevertheless, as the phenomenal growth in the storage
consumption continues, the importance of Storage networking is more strategic than
ever. So this industry would serve itself better if we would try to present a relatively
clear explanation of today's complex storage networking solutions and the associated
prevalent issues from technical to the business implication. Along this theme, this
feature topic seeks articles in tutorials and implementation experiences and
observations on, but not limited to, the following topics:
· SAN, NAS, DAS architectures, Storage transfer format (File, block etc.) and
the future trend and evolution
· Current standards and work in progress
· Dominant networking protocols (FCP, iFCP, iSCSI, FCIP etc.), application
contexts and merit-demerit comparisons and recommendations.
· Security considerations and recommendations in Storage networking
· Storage related traffic management (switching, QoS, Queuing, congestion
controls, caching,) recommendations and considerations
· Network centric Virtualization
· Grid or utility based storage networking
· Web centric storage networking considerations
All accepted papers need to follow the magazine's guidelines. Specially very few
limited number of simple equations should be used in articles. These guidelines cover
among other things the maximum number of references that is allowed, the
maximum length for the papers, the nature of article and so on. They can be
consulted at:http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/ci1/index.html
