29th European Conference on Optical Communication
14th International Conference on Integrated Optics and Optical Fibre Communication
September 21-25, 2003 Rimini Italy

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

About

ECOC represents the largest conference on optical communication in Europe,
gathering thousands of participants to both the technical sessions and the tech-
nical exhibition.

In 2003, ECOC combines with IOOC, the largest international event in the optical
communication sector, held every two years in Europe, America and Far-East in turn.

The technical programme of ECOC-IOOC 2003 will include over 300 con-
tributed papers, qualified invited papers, as well as topical symposia, informa-
tive tutorials, short courses and workshops covering the most recent and
promising developments in the following fields: optical fibres and waveguides
components, optoelectronics and integrated optics devices, optical systems and
networks and related subjects.

In line with most recent ECOC's a very large exhibition will be run alongside
ECOC-IOOC 2003, covering a broad range of products and services in the sec-
tor of optical communication and related fields. Hundreds of Companies will
display and demonstrate their most advanced outcome, including systems and
applications, components and materials, software, fabrication and testing
equipment, etc. A job centre, an investor forum, and special presentations of
topical products and services will complement the exhibition.

As such ECOC-IOOC 2003 addresses everybody in optical communication,
including researchers and implementers, network operators and service
providers, vendors and users of optical products and services, as well as mar-
ket analysts and investors.
ECOC

Technical program

ECOC-IOOC 2003 will have parallel sessions with contributed papers (both oral
and poster presentations) on the topics listed below, as well as invited papers
and tutorials on current topics. Symposia giving detailed presentations on
selected highly interesting topics will also be scheduled in the Programme.
Prior to the conference, short courses covering the most important areas and
workshops on the `hottest' topical issues will be organised.

ECOC-IOOC 2003 will cover the following fields:

1. Fibres and waveguide components
All aspects from design issues and theory to characterisation and fabrication of
fibres and waveguides, including specialty fibres, fibre/waveguide lasers and
amplifiers, gratings, dispersion compensators, microstructured fibres, sensors,
etc.; fibre cabling.

2. Optoelectronics and semiconductor integrated devices
All aspects from design issues and theory to characterisation and fabrication of
optoelectronic and semiconductor integrated devices, including wavelength
converters, optical MEMs, microstructured and photonic bandgap materials and
devices, quantum wires and quantum dots, etc.

3. Systems technologies
WDM and OTDM transmission systems and experiments, system modelling,
optical regeneration and processing, adaptive compensators, modu-
lation/multiplexing/demultiplexing techniques etc. Other system technologies
are also included: fibre radio and microwave photonics, CATV, free space
optical systems, etc.

4. Networks and switching
Optical network architecture and performance studies, net-
work demonstrations; core, metro and access network
modelling, planning, design, optimisation and interoper-
ability, node architecture and implementations, network
control and management, optical switching, etc.
More detailed lists of topics and the indication of the Subcommittees will be
available at the Conference web site: www.ecoc.it.

Paper Submission
Paper Submission
Original, previously unpublished contributions are solicited in the fields listed
above. Papers should concentrate on results.

Submit:
1. Title, author's names, affiliation and a 35 word abstract for inclusion in the
advance programme.
2. Full paper (2 page max.) including title, names, affiliation and abstract in PDF
format (PDF converters are available from the ECOC-IOOC 2003 web site).
3. Preferred Subcommittee for regular papers.
4. Your preference: Oral or poster presentation (only regular papers).

Detailed instructions on how to prepare a paper for ECOC-IOOC 2003, includ-
ing the paper template, can be downloaded from the web site: www.ecoc.it.
Use of this template is mandatory and only papers following these instructions
will be accepted.
Deadline for submission of papers: April 15, 2003.
The first author will be notified about acceptance or rejection of the contribu-
tion by letter (unless specified otherwise by the authors).
