The field of wireless and mobile computing is an important and research
challenging area of computing today. This has been made possible due to the
tremendous and continued growth of wireless technology, creating the need of
ubiquitous distributed services: anywhere and anytime.
In addition to wireless networks based on a pre-existing infrastructure,
where wireless communications take place only between the end-nodes and the
access points, mobile ad hoc wireless networks and sensor networks are
emerging rapidly. Such networks do not need any infrastructure to work, but
they comprise mobile clients as well as mobile servers, and they pose
challenges in diverse areas such as location management, resource
allocation, network connectivity, reliability and security, and energy
consumption.
In this scenario, there is a great need of sophisticated algorithmic
solutions to realize and maintain high-speed, high performance,
cost-effective, energy-efficient and reliable wireless networks. This
special issue aims at bringing together state-of-the-art contributions in
discrete algorithms, combinatorial optimization and methods in the context
of mobile, wireless, ad-hoc, and sensor networks. We are seeking papers that
are original, unpublished and not currently under review by other journals.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
* algorithms for tracking and locating mobile users
* algorithms on satellite and radio networks
* approximated and exact frequency assignment algorithms
* caching and prefetching for information access in wireless networks
* cryptography and security
* data management on mobile and wireless computing
* distributed algorithms for single-hop and multiple-hop ad-hoc networks
* discovery, allocation and management of resources in mobile, wireless
and ad-hoc networks
* energy saving protocols for ad hoc and sensor networks
* pricing modeling and solution
* pushing and pulling information solutions
* routing and communication primitives in ad-hoc and sensor networks
* synchronization and scheduling issues in mobile and ad hoc networks
* security solutions
This issue will host a special section on "3rd International Workshop on
Wireless, Mobile and Ad Hoc Networks (WMAN)", to be held in conjunction with
IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium, Nice,
April 2003.
