Ad Hoc Networking

IEEE Computer seeks articles for a special issue on Ad Hoc Networking,
to appear in February 2004. The guest editors for this
special issue are Jie Wu, Florida Atlantic University, and Ivan
Stojmenovic, University of Ottawa.

Wireless networks and mobile computing research has until recently
concentrated on single-hop networks (network nodes communicating
directly to a fixed infrastructure), such as cellular and satellite
systems. Ad hoc networking covers multi-hop scenarios (network nodes
communicating via other network nodes) such as conference, hospital,
battlefield, rescue, and monitoring scenarios. Particular ad hoc network
systems include packet radio networks, sensor networks, personal
communication systems, rooftop networks, and wireless local area
networks. Even multi-hop cellular networks may be a viable option when a
huge number of cellular phones are concentrated on a small area such as
stadium.

This special issue will cover comprehensively data link, network and
transport layers of ad hoc networks, as well as security, simulation and
power management issues in sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad
hoc networks. Particular topics also include IEEE 801.11 and Bluetooth
based medium access control, position discovery and management in ad hoc
networks, clustering, routing, broadcasting, multicasting, quality of
service, topology construction and maintenance in ad hoc networks.

The goal of the special issue is to publish original research and review
articles which should be comprehensive to all readers, regardless of
their specialty. Submissions should be limited to 6000 words (six to
seven pages in the final magazine format), where each figure or table
counts as 300 words, and the number of references is limited to 12.

The submission deadline is 31 May 2003. Send papers in pdf files to both
jie@cse.fau.edu and ivan@site.uottawa.ca.
