Management of Optical Networks and Services
Optical networking has undergone an impressive change in recent years: The
capacity per fiber has dramatically increased in bandwidth and range; Switched
optical networks with greater flexibility are popping up. The key feature of such new
networks is the dynamic provisioning of high-capacity optical network services.
One piece in the overall picture is the dynamic signaling. Several proposals for
signaling in optical networks have been made. Among the them GMPLS, which is
in the standardization process at the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and in
UNI 1.0 of the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF).
The other piece includes management solutions, which center around automated
service provisioning and customer network management. Automated service
provisioning allows for faster provisioning and less failure in the process. This issue
gets even more severe if multiple domains are crossed to provide optical network
services. One part of automation can be Customer Network Management (CNM).
In this context, the customer may be a carrier, service provider, or an end user.
The customer is given an enhanced service by being allowed to view into the
network, in a limited way, to monitor and adjust its service at will.
We invite contributions covering all aspects of Management of Optical Networks.
Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
- Management Systems for Switched Optical Networks
- Management Information Modeling for Optical Networks
- Optical Network Service creation and provisioning
- Management of IP/MPLS/GbE over Optical
- Fault management in multi-tier networks
- Inter-domain Management Interface
- Path management
- Management in the GMPLS environment
