Special Issue of the Performance Evaluation Journal on

Long Range Dependence and Heavy Tail Distributions

Guest Editor: Zhen Liu, IBM Research

One of the most important research topics in performance modeling and
evaluation in the last decade has been the study of long range dependency
and heavy tail distributions of the Internet and Web traffic. Since the
milestone publication of Leland et al. in 1993 (Sigcomm 1993), significant
research effort has been spent on traffic characterization and modeling
using long range dependent processes and heavy tailed distributions. In
parallel, queueing analyses with such forms of input traffic have received a
great deal of attention by researchers of the performance evaluation
community. The goal of this special issue is to provide a comprehensive
review of these issues and their impact in the Internet, Web services and
applications, and e-Business.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Long range dependence: traffic characterization, traffic models
- Subexponential distributions: traffic characterization, traffic models
- Queueing analysis with long range dependent process and subexponential
traffic models
- Scheduling, control and optimization in the presence of long range
dependent and subexponential traffic models.

Both survey papers and original technical contributions will be accepted
for consideration.

Papers are to be submitted to Zhen Liu at zhen@watson.ibm.com. Only pdf or
ps files are accepted. The presentation format should follow the Performance
Evaluation journal instructions.
