                IEEE Wireless Communications Special Issues

       4G Mobile Communications - Towards Open Wireless Architecture

   The number of subscribers for mobile communications has increased much
   faster than predicted, particularly for terrestrial use, and the
   majority of traffic is changing from speech-oriented communications to
   multimedia communications. It is generally expected that the number of
   portable handsets will exceed the number of PCs connected to the
   Internet. The step towards 4G or 3G beyond has been taking to support
   advanced and wideband multimedia services. The interworking between 4G
   and other access systems in terms of horizontal and vertical handover
   and seamless services with service negotiation including mobility,
   security and QoS will be a key requirement. Therefore, the most
   important issue in developing future 4G mobile systems is the
   architecture based on the converged broadband wireless platform and
   targeted for open wireless infrastructure. This special issue is very
   timely and valuable for those involved in the research of next
   generation mobile communications. Contributions are solicited in 4G
   mobile research and applied areas with focus on architecture and
   models. The topics of interest include but are not limited to: 4G open
   system architecture
     * 4G open services and application architecture
     * 4G open radio access network architecture
     * 4G radio software and hardware design architecture
     * 4G network protocols and signalling
     * 4G inter-operability and co-existence model
     * 4G spectrum sharing and dynamic bandwidth allocation
     * 4G network management model
     * 4G All-IP architecture
     * 4G MIMO architecture
     * 4G performance analysis model
     * 4G radio network deployment concepts
     * 4G service provisioning architecture

   Original, unpublished contributions and invited articles will be
   considered for this issue. Papers should be submitted to Professor
   Shen in electronic version (ps or pdf). Authors are also requested to
   submit a separate cover letter via email, which contains the paper
   title, the affiliations, and a 200-word abstract. Submissions must be
   made according to the following timetable:

   Submission of full manuscript: September 15, 2003
   Notification of acceptance: November 15, 2003
   Camera-ready due: January 1, 2004
   Publication date: April 2004
