OVERVIEW:

Thanks to the recent achievements in the field of wireless transmission, the
wireless paradigm has come to dominate the scenario of high-speed and
flexible access to network services and to the Internet. Wireless devices
represent a key technology for the design and deployment of networks at low
cost, and with reduced impact on existing infrastructures. Although no
killer application has been yet defined, an increasing number of users is
considering mobility and cableless devices as instruments for improving
productivity and quality-of-life.

Different standards for wireless networking were recently proposed such as
the successful 802.11b i.e. Wi-Fi, 802.15.1 i.e. Bluetooth, and the emerging
802.15.3. In addition, promising research is being performed in the field of
Ultra-WideBand Radio Networks. In this framework, important aspects
regarding in particular medium access and topological network organization
are however still open issues. Consequently significant research effort is
nowadays focused on the optimization of MAC and network levels in Wireless
Local Area Networks (WLAN).

The proposed issue aims at providing an updated state of the art regarding
recent achievements in the field of WLAN organization, with specific
attention to the MAC and network levels. We are looking for papers that are
original, unpublished, and not currently under review by any other journal,
conference or workshop.

The issue will focus on (but will not be limited to) the following topics:

    * Efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) Strategies for WLANs
    * Resource Assignment and Sharing in WLANs
    * Power-efficient MAC and routing protocols
    * Location-based MAC and routing protocols
    * Optimization of WLAN Topology
