The TERENA Networking Conference 2004 is organised by TERENA, the
Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association. The
conference will be held on the Rhodes campus of the University of the
Aegean, hosted by the Greek Research and Technology Network, GRNET.
TERENA Networking Conferences are prominent annual events, offering an
opportunity to present and discuss technical and strategic aspects of
the provision of networks and services to the research and education
community, and the corresponding research and development activities.
They bring together leading figures from the research networking
community in Europe and worldwide, and provide a unique opportunity to
learn about the latest developments and plans.

The theme of this year's conference is One Step Ahead. "One Step Ahead
of what?," you might ask. Well certainly we are one step further
   towards single sign-on, high-speed pan-European optical networks,
virtual learning environments and a host of other technological
developments than we were at this time last year. Europe also has the
ambition to be one step ahead of the rest of the world in several
areas of networking such as: the application of Grids to
   computationally complex scientific problems, policy-based
authorisation infrastructures, and testing and deployment of fully
optical networks in the research networking environment. So this
year's conference is designed to put you one step ahead of your peers
by presenting you with some of the very latest developments in the
   networking arena.

The conference will be structured around keynote presentations and
invited talks, complemented by presentations of reviewed papers and
   panel discussions.
   David Chadwick Programme Committee Chair

The conference presentations will focus on the technology as well as
   the user applications for:
     * ADVANCED  COLLABORATIVE  ENVIRONMENTS:  peer-to-peer,  end-to-end,
streaming, videoconferencing, virtual worlds and virtual
communities, information retrieval and distance education, remote
       instrumentation
     * SEAMLESS SECURITY: single sign-on, federated identities,
       policy-based security, application independent authorisation,
network and system security, application data security, privacy,
       intrusion detection and NOC co-ordination
     * GRID DEVELOPMENTS: updates on Grid projects in the 6th Framework
Programme, making Grids more scalable, usable and secure
     * SPOTLIGHT ON THE FUTURE: IPv6, presence and integrated
communications technologies, optical networks, network performance
and quality of service, next generation web services and semantic
       web
     * SEAMLESS CONNECTIVITY: cross-organisational roaming, the global
desktop, roaming between access technologies, mobile access,
       increasing connectivity in hard-to-network places
     * INNOVATIVE INFORMATION HANDLING: highly replicated content, new
indexing paradigms, huge quantities of information

The programme committee particularly encourages the submission of
proposals for panel discussions, with of panellists who hold opposing
views or who present comparative perspectives on leading-edge
   practices and issues.

   SUBMISSION
Extended abstracts (rather than full papers) are invited on all
subjects relevant to the spirit and objectives of the conference: to
present, discuss and learn about the latest developments in networking
technology for the research and education community and their use by
   the community.

The above topics are an indication of the planned scope of the
conference, but are not meant to be restrictive.

Extended abstracts of about 1200 words (two A4 pages) must be
submitted in English, the official language of the conference. The
abstracts should be structured according to the Formatting Guidelines
   and Submission Instructions for Authors.

TO SUBMIT YOUR PAPER, PLEASE PLACE IT IN THE DROP BOX AT:
   www.terena.nl/tnc2004/submit/

The deadline for submission of papers is 30 November 2003.

Closer to the date of the conference, TERENA will issue a Call for
Short Presentations to provide an opportunity to present late-breaking
news in sessions dedicated to recent results in the development and
deployment of networking infrastructures, user services and
   applications.
