Recent advances in wireless and mobile communications have set the scene for introducing new services. The demand for broadband wireless services and applications is huge and growing rapidly. People are increasingly relying on mobile systems and devices for information, communications, and entertainment. We are moving into an era of pervasive computing (computing at any place and at any time) and ubiquitous communications (communication at any place and at any time), which provides ample opportunities for emerging wireless services and applications. This workshop solicits the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of broadband wireless services, enabling technologies such as middleware, and novel wireless applications. BroadWISE 2004 will provide a compelling forum for socialization and formal discussion of the research challenges with seasoned practitioners and colleagues from throughout the industry and academia. TOPICS OF INTEREST The BroadWISE workshop invites original, unpublished, full papers that address technical challenges and research issues in providing broadband wireless services and applications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Middleware and service architectures for mobile applications - Data management for mobile applications - Resource discovery of mobile services - Device discovery - Systems for location awareness and determination - Overlay network solutions for wireless applications - Seamless handoff for mobile applications - Scalability and QoS aspects for large scale wireless services - Universal broad access for information services - Design, implementation, and evaluation of mobile information systems - Cross layer design for wireless applications - Application interfaces and services supporting mobile users - Systems support for mobile robots - Experience with mobile systems - Wireless service evaluation - Location-dependent services - Security techniques for wireless services - Privacy issues in mobile services - Network support for mobile commerce - Broadband access for pervasive computing - Mobility management for broadband wireless services - Wireless Internet gaming - Situation-aware mobile devices and systems - Adaptive services in wireless networks - Application-aware wireless networks - Applications in broadband personal area networks (PAN) - Services and applications in ultra wideband (UWB) systems - Novel applications for wireless cyberspace - Smart house and environment for better living - Wireless entertainment networks - Wireless home networking - Wearable computing applications - Wireless medical, health care services - Wireless surveillance, home monitoring - Smart wireless services JOURNAL PUBLICATION The best papers of this workshop will be considered for possible publication in the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. SUBMISSION Papers should be written in English, should not exceed 20 double-spaced, single-column pages, including figures and references, and should include an abstract, not to exceed 250 words. Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the EDAS system. All papers will be peer reviewed.
